פטריית מאיטקה נחשבה בתקופה העתיקה לפטריית מאכל איכותית, טעימה ונדירה והיה לה ביקוש גדול בקרב האצולה ביפן. בתקופה הפיאודלית היפנית, השבטים היפנים, שהיו אמונים על איסוף הפטרייה, היו שומרים בסוד את מרבצי הגדילה שלה. כאשר נתין היה מביא לאציל פטריית מאיטקה, נחשב הדבר לביטוי של כבוד והערצה. כאשר איכר או מלקט פטריות היה מוצא מאיטקה, הוא היה מרקד משמחה, מאחר והתשלום עליה היה כמשקלה במטבעות כסף (Silver), מכאן שמה היפני Wu Rong (“פטריית הריקודים”). על פי אגדה יפנית עתיקה, קבוצה של נזירות בודהיסטיות וחוטבי עצים נפגשו על שביל הר, שם הם גילו פרי של פטריות מאיטקה העולה מתוך רצפת היער. הם החליטו לטעום את הפטרייה, וכאות לשמחה הגדולה על גילוי הפטרייה הטעימה הזאת, הם החלו לרקוד כדי לחגוג את הגילוי.

שמה הסיני Hui Shu Hua מפורש כפרח עץ הליים, ומתאר את מקורה של הפטרייה כפטרייה טפילה הצומחת על גבי עץ זה. באיטליה ובכל הקהילות האיטלקיות האמריקאיות בצפון מזרח ארצות הברית, הפטרייה ידועה כ”סיניורינה”, או “האישה הלא נשואה”. בקרב דוברי אנגלית ידועה הפטרייה כ”תרנגולת היער” (Hen of the Woods), משום שהפרחים שלה מזכירים נוצות מתפוררות של תרנגולת.

פטריית מאיטקה גדלה ביערות בהם מזג האוויר קריר, בעיקר ביערות של צפון מזרח אמריקה, צפון יפן, סין ואסיה. את הפטרייה ניתן למצוא בבסיסי עצים, בעיקר בבסיסי עצי אלון ועצי בוקיצה, ולעיתים רחוקות גם בעצי מייפל, לאורך החופים ועל גזעים מתים. משקל הפטרייה יכול להגיע עד ל-45 ק”ג, ולכן היא קרויה גם מלך הפטריות (King of Mushrooms).

הפטרייה גדלה פרא בחלק הצפון-מזרחי של יפן ובצפון אמריקה. היא נחשבת פטריית מאכל עיקרית במטבח היפני (בנוסף לפטריות שיטאקה, שימג’י ואנוקי), עם פופולאריות הולכת וגדלה במטבח המערבי.

במחקרים נמצא שהמיצליום בפטריית מאיטקה מכיל מגוון גדול יותר של פוליסכרידים במשקל מולקולרי נמוך מאשר בפטריות אחרות. מולקולות אלה ידועות כבעלות יכולת להפעיל את התגובה החיסונית של גופנו ולשפר את היכולת של תאי החיסון מסוג NK Cells (תאי הרג טבעיים), הפועלים גם כנגד תאים סרטניים.

מטבע הדברים, ובשל היותה פטרייה חשובה ונחשקת, בסוף שנות ה-70 החלו לגדל את המאיטקה בחקלאות המסחרית. הפטרייה משמשת מסורתית למאכל ולמטרות ריפוי ופעילותה נחקרה רבות במהלך השנים.

תמצית נוזלית (טינקטורה): בריכוז של 1:3, 45% אלכוהול, 5-15 מ”ל ליום.

תמצית יבשה: תמצית תקנית בריכוז של 30% פוליסכרידים, 200-1,000 מ”ג ליום.

מרתח: 3-9 גרם ליום.

פטריית מאיטקה הינה פטרייה בטוחה לשימוש.

בשל הפעילות מעוררת מערכת החיסון שלה (immunostimulant), אין להשתמש בפטרייה למושתלי איברים.

בשל פעילותה ההיפוגליקמית של הפטרייה, מומלץ לנוטלי אינסולין לנטר את רמות הסוכר שלהם בעת נטילת הפטרייה.
